  22. QUESTION:  I am seeking information about a type of food poisoning called
  23. "bottled poison".  I know it is very serious, for my brother-in-law almost
  24. died from this condition.  I have looked in all the books in our small library
  25. but can find nothing written about this.  Can you provide me with any
  26. information to help us understand what happened?

  30. ANSWER:  My first thought was that this was a case of poisoning from illegally
  31. produced whiskey, "moonlighter's hootch" or "moonshine".  Such liquor has been
  32. known to produce serious problems, that might be considered food poisoning.
  33. However, I felt that you would have understood that situation, and therefore
  34. you had been mistaken about the real name of the condition.  So, using a
  35. computer search on a standard medical textbook, I entered the word "bottle"
  36. and found, just 7 words away, the term "botulism"; and I believe that this is
  37. the condition that fits the circumstances you described.
  38.      Botulism is indeed a most serious type of food poisoning, capable of
  39. causing death if the amount of poison in the food is great enough.  The poison
  40. or "toxin" is produced by an organism, Clostridium botulinum, and it is the
  41. most potent bacterial poison known.  The organism is found in the soil and sea
  42. water, and can form spores, which can contaminate food that is improperly
  43. processed or cooked.  The spores can resist low cooking temperatures, then
  44. produce active organisms which in turn produce the toxins that taints the
  45. food.  The toxin is one that affects the nerves of the peripheral nervous
  46. system.  Symptoms of "botulism" include double vision, dry mouth, nausea and
  47. vomiting and a progressive paralysis that starts with muscles in the face and
  48. then descends down the body affecting the arms, chest muscles and finally the
  49. legs.  Treatment includes induced vomiting, if the poisoned food was eaten
  50. recently, gastric irrigation, and laxatives.  Antitoxins may be used within 24
  51. hours after the start of symptoms, but they have some serious side effects and
  52. are considered for use in only the most severe cases, which also require
  53. hospitalization in an intensive care setting.
